Am 6. April 1895 wurde Wilde vom Polizeigericht in der Bow Street in London wegen Verstoßes gegen Artikel 11 des Strafgerichtergänzungsgesetzes von 1885 wegen homosexueller Beziehungen angeklagt. Am 25. Mai wurde Wilde schuldig gesprochen und zu zwei Jahren Freiheitsentzug mit Zwangsarbeit im Zuchthaus zu Reading verurteilt, wo er diese Abrechnung schrieb.
