Description
This set is part of the "Wiener Staatsoper Live" series of remastered historical live recordings and in this case presents some extraordinary singing from the most remarkable female singers who have performed at that institution. From Lotte Lehmann singing the Marschallin's monologue in 1933 (which was actually recorded in a studio, but definitely worth stretching a point to include) to Reri Grist, Gwyneth Jones and Christa Ludwig performing the final Rosenkavalier trio in 1976, the collection puts together some incredible operatic moments in chronological order. This means that not only do you get to compare different voices, but also to hear vocal techniques and recording standards changing. The collection also operates as an introduction to the varied worlds of Strauss' operas, from the eccentric orchestrations of Die Frau Ohne Schatten to the pure golden soup of Ariadne. You don't get the polish of studio recording, but you do get the excitement of the moment: Irmgard Seefried's rendition of the end of Act I of Ariadne is so impassioned and spontaneous that you can actually hear the orchestra completely taken by surprise. --Warwick Thompson
