A Translation of the Old Saxon Hêliand into modern English. The translation is intended for use in a longer companion volume which is a commentary on the poem. The poem was written by an anonymous Viking Age poet somewhere in what is now northern Germany. The poem was read or sung to Viking Age warriors as well as to catechumens in the Carolignian monasteries during the 9th and 10th centuries. It was then lost until manuscripts were discovered in the early 19th century.
