Thomas Billhardt, geboren 1937 in Chemnitz, hat Menschen auf vier Kontinenten in ihren Lebenssituationen porträtiert. Bekannt wurde er in den 1960er Jahren mit seinen Beobachtungen auf dem Berliner Alexanderplatz. Internationale Aufmerksamkeit fanden vor allem seine Fotos aus dem Viet­namkrieg und seine Kinderfotos aus aller Welt. Er war ein Ausnahmefotograf mit Ausnahmeprivilegien in der DDR und engagierte sich leidenschaftlich für das Kinderhilfswerk UNICEF. In diesem Buch tritt der Bildmensch Billhardt als Erzähler von Episoden und Anekdoten auf. Selbstbewusst und selbstironisch berichtet er von seinen Erfolgserlebnissen, Emotionen und Irrtümern. Dabei blendet er auch sein Privatleben nicht aus. So porträtiert er auf überraschende Weise sich selbst.
