EARLY CAVITY DETECTION WITH DIAGNOSTIC AND IMAGING TOOLS

EARLY CAVITY DETECTION WITH DIAGNOSTIC AND IMAGING TOOLS

0 - Default Title
Description
Dental caries is a dynamic, multifactorial disease involving cycles of demineralization and remineralization of tooth structure. Early carious lesions often remain clinically undetectable until cavitation occurs, making early diagnosis crucial for preventive and minimally invasive dentistry. Early cavity detection enables timely preventive interventions such as fluoride therapy and pit and fissure sealants, thereby reducing the need for extensive restorative procedures.Conventional diagnostic methods, including visual and visual-tactile examination and radiography, are widely used but have limited sensitivity for detecting early and proximal carious lesions. Visual methods are subjective, while radiographs provide two-dimensional images and may fail to identify initial enamel changes. To overcome these limitations, several digital and advanced diagnostic aids have been introduced.Digital radiography, light-based methods such as transillumination and fluorescence, electric-based systems, and ultrasound-based tools enhance early caries detection by improving sensitivity, objectivity, and lesion monitoring. Advanced imaging modalities such as cone-beam computed tomography and optical.
