« Je suis né dans un ordre détruit, un paysage détruit, un peuple détruit, une société détruite. Et je n'ai pas voulu réinstaurer un ordre ; j'avais vu assez de soi-disant ordre. J'ai été contraint de tout remettre en question, d'être « naïf », de repartir de zéro. Je n'ai ni la sensibilité ni la culture ni la philosophie des maniéristes italiens, mais je suis maniériste au sens où je déforme les choses. Je suis brutal, naïf et gothique. »

« I was born into a destroyed order, a destroyed landscape, a destroyed people, a destroyed society. And I didn't want to re-establish an order : I'd seen enough of so-called order. I was forced to question everything, to be 'naive', to start again. I don't have the sensitivity the education or the philosophy of the Italian Mannerists, but I'm a Mannerist in the sense that I deform things. I'm brutal, naive and Gothic. »
