Nous sommes dans le dernier lustre du XIX^ème siècle, en cet après-midi du 11 juin 1895. Sur une route d'Ile de France, un aristocrate mène une lourde machine qui fait trembler le sol et file à 40 km/h. La puissante respiration de sa machine à vapeur couvre le bruit de ses roues cerclées de fer. Quelques kilomètres derrière lui, une légère « charrette anglaise » noire tente de la suivre, perchée sur ses roues jaune vif dont les bandages de caoutchouc effleurent le sol. L'ingénieur qui la conduit et son mécanicien restent concentrés malgré les trépidations de son moteur à pétrole.

Où vont ces hommes ? Ils foncent vers Bordeaux et n'ont qu'une idée en tête, revenir à Paris le plus vite possible après avoir roulé pendant 1200 kilomètres. Le savent-ils ? Ils sont en train de créer la course automobile. Cet ouvrage rend hommage aux concurrents de la première grande course automobile de l'Histoire.

11 June 1895, one afternoon of the final lustrum of the 19^th century, on a road just outside Paris, an aristocrat travelling at a speed of 40 km/h (25 mph) with the ground trembling beneath him, grapples with the commands of his monumental steam engine. The deep huffing of the steam drowns out the grate and clatter of its iron wheels on the stone surface. Some way behind, a slimline black vehicle, looking not dissimilar to a horse cart perched on bright yellow wheels with rubber strapping, endeavours to keep pace. Despite the racket of its throbbing internal combustion engine, the machine's driver and passenger are deep in concentration. The vehicles are heading to Bordeaux ; their drivers share the same goal : to complete a 1200 km (745 mile) loop across France in the shortest possible time. Unbeknownst to them, they have become the world's first racing drivers. It is to these men, the competitors of the world's first major automobile race, that this work pays tribute.
