Description
Giacinto Calderara (1730-1803) was a highly talented composer who composed and conducted several hundred works of vocal and instrumental music over a career of fifty-four years. His greatest triumph was Ricimero , first performed in Turin in 1755. It is based on the true-life story of a king of the Goths during the late Roman Empire, and his conflict with an unlawful king of Norway. Calderara is known to have studied music in Naples, and then served as music director for the cathedral at Asti, Italy for several years. He composed two opere serie in three acts. The first, Alessandro nell'Indie ("Alexander the Great in India"), with libretto by the famous Metastasio, was produced in 1752. The other was Ricimero , first performed at the
Teatro Regio , Turin, on December 26, 1755. The libretto of this work was by one
