ODOMODU'S ODYSSEY Ije Odumodu Jere tells the story of adventures and civilizing mission of Odumodu, the principal character of the novel. The shipwreck which occurs on their way (from Eko) to St. Helena exposes Odumodu to all sorts of dangers and adventures, as he searches for something to eat, where to take shelter and something to wear . The urge and curiosity to find out the terminus of the jungle in which he finds himself, after the shipwreck, leads him into the land of Finda. In Finda, after receiving some initial maltreatments and threats (usually meted to a suspicious stranger), Odumodu is given a place of honour. He learns the language of the people and is made the secretary of the state. He later marries the daughter of the King of the land with whom he gets three sons. He and his children (who are now well educated) help to civilize the people of Finda by stopping them from practicing cannibalism and by revolutionizing their agricultural and legal systems.
