En 2006 et 2007, lorsque les rebelles du Front Uni pour le Changement (FUC) de Mahamat Nour Abdelkerim et ceux de Mahamat Nouri lancent respectivement un raid sur la capitale tchadienne, il se porte volontaire en tant qu'élève-officier et participe victorieusement à ces combats. Aux côtés du Maréchal, c'est lui qui rompt l'encerclement à Massaguet, organise brillamment la défense du palais présidentiel à N'Djamena en 2008 et met en déroute les rebelles de Timan Erdimi à Am-Dam, à l'issue de la grande bataille de l'Est en mai 2009. Commandant adjoint des Forces Armées Tchadiennes en Intervention au Mali (FATIM), Mahamat Idriss Déby contribue significativement à la neutralisation des groupes terroristes au Nord-Mali et au sauvetage du pays en 2013. En avril 2021, à la tête d'une colonne, il disperse les rebelles du Front pour l'Alternance et la Concorde au Tchad (FACT) de Mahamat Mahdi Ali en provenance de la Libye. De manière à éviter le chaos au Tchad suite au décès subit du Président Idriss Déby Itno et agissant en patriote, il accepte la proposition de ses collègues militaires de lui confier la présidence du Conseil Militaire de Transition, après le désistement du successeur constitutionnel. Après sa prise de pouvoir, le Président Mahamat Idriss Déby prend toutes les dispositions pour garantir la paix, la sécurité et l'ordre républicain et pose de nombreux actes salutaires
