Lines and Grooves

- Default Title
Description
Joshua Bayer Lines and Grooves Joshua Bayer is a bassist and educator in the Washington, DC area. He and his group have produced a straight-ahead jazz CD which is, with the exception of George Gershwin's "Prelude," entirely his original compositions. With Bayer on acoustic bass, the rest of the ensemble includs Marty Nau on saxophone, Bob Sykes on piano and Rhodes and Luther Gray on Drums. All the compositions are melodic and listenable. One might expect that, with a bassist as leader-composer, there might be an excess of bass performance. Such is not the case here; Bayer puts in a great performance with balance of all the players. And speaking of balance, drummer Luther Gray, the timekeeper of the ensemble, keeps the rhythm going with his subdued performance. You know the drums are there, but they don't overpower the group. The CD is almost one hour in length, so you aren't short-changed here. My two favorite selections, of the nine included, are Gershwin's "Prelude" and "Blues for Now," a bluesy, rhythmic composition which gives each player equal opportunity to be heard and appreciated.
