Description
The newspaper business, established in and around Fleet Street for centuries and the last major manufacturing industry in London, has mostly deserted its traditional home. It leaves behind it a district of London rich in historic associations and architecture: a medley of back-street offices and works, busy streets, ancient alleys, time-honoured pubs once frequented by men of letters, and a few magnificent monuments to the Fleet Street newspaper. This book, timed to coincide with the exhibition "A Farewell to Fleet Street" at the Museum of London in 1988, presents the results of an historic and architectural study of Fleet Street and the London newspaper industry undertaken by English Heritage's London Division. The authors trace the development and evolution of the industry in its unique metropolitan setting since 1500 and review the changes taking place to newspapers and newspaper buildings and to the Fleet Street itself today. Includes illustrations and a map showing the main newspaper sites in and around Fleet Street.
