- Default Title
Description
This book is on the reading list of several universities such as the University of Glasgow. It can be used by advanced level students and for general reading too. The material has been arranged in a way that draws out the salient points and relates the outline to the social, economic and intellectual background. The Foundations of Modern Europe may appear a somewhat ambitious title considering that so much of the European superstructure has since been altered. Nevertheless, the main elements which have come to condition the changes of the twentieth century were first to achieve prominence during the nineteenth. Class distinctions, economic developments, scientific and technological discovery, ideological debates and political solutions all began to assume a more modern and almost familiar ring. These factors have been ysed in Chapters I, II and VIII and provide a framework within which subsequent developments may be seen to occur. In later chapters the biographical and background material has been blended to try to bring out the role of individual statesmanship and to equate their significance with that of the other factors involved.
