Félix Grandet, ex commerciante arricchitosi attraverso spregiudicate speculazioni, vive in un regime familiare di stretta avarizia al quale sottopone la figlia Eugénie, a lui del tutto sottomessa. L'arrivo di un cugino, Charles, viene a turbare questo equilibrio. La ragazza se ne innamora e giunge a donargli il prezioso tesoro di monete d'oro affidatogli dal padre.
