The Illustrated History of Thornycroft Trucks and Buses

0 - Default Title
Description
One of the first of Britain's heavy vehicle manufacturers, and with a history spanning over 80 years, Thornycroft makes an intriguing subject. The first Thornycroft vehicle - the No 1 Steam Van, with innovative front-wheel drive and rear-wheel steering - was built in 1895 by company founder John I. Thornycroft. Although the vehicles seemed to play second fiddle to the more glamorous warships for which the company became famous, it was the commercial vehicles which kept Thornycroft up among the top half dozen manufacturers for most of its existence. It exported trucks and buseses to Ceylon, Hong Kong and Cairo. In view of the many Nubians, Antars and Big bens that are still in service today- 1989- it would seem that the name Thornycroft will be around for a long time yet.
