Britten's Sinfonia da Requiem was written during 1940 when he was living in the USA: the work was originally commissioned by the Japanese government to mark the 2600th anniversary of the Mikado's dynasty, but was rejected, despite initial approval, because of it's Christian overtones. The "Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra was commissioned in 1946 for the educational film: The Instruments of the Orchestra.
