Fanny Viollet crée le foisonnement des techniques qui sont tantôt simples, tantôt savantes, tantôt traditionnelles, tantôt nouvelles. Méditerranéenne, elle est exubérante, passionnée, fougueuse, expansive et elle est, simultanément, méthodique. Ses oeuvres diverses donnent à penser, à séduire, à sourire... Elle bricole. Elle combine. Elle trie. Elle sépare. Elle différencie. Elle choisit. Elle enchevêtre. Elle tisse. Elle tresse. Elle trame. Elle noue et dénoue.

Cet ouvrage dresse un panorama de l'oeuvre d'une plasticienne qui, en tant que femme, a décidé d'abandonner la toile et le pinceau au profit du fil et de l'aiguille. La première partie est consacrée aux regards et réflexions d'historiens, de critiques et d'écrivains sur le travail de l'artiste. La seconde se présente sous forme d'abécédaire couvrant un large éventail de techniques textiles mises au service de la réutilisation de matériaux aujourd'hui rejetés ou progressivement abandonnés : cartes routières, emballages alimentaires, mouchoirs et vêtements usagés, napperons de pâtissier, sacs poubelles, cartes, tickets de métro, etc. Outre cette démarche à base de récupération, l'artiste a consacré une part essentielle de sa création à son matériau de base : le fil.

Fanny Viollet creates a luscious outpouring of techniques that are sometimes simple, other times ingenious, sometimes traditional, other times innovative. A child of the Mediterranean, she is exuberant, passionate, fiery and expansive, at the same time as she is methodical. Her varied works are food for thought, they seduce us and make us smile... She's handy and smart. She sorts, separates and differentiates. She chooses and interlocks. She weaves, braids and twines. She knots and unknots.

This work sketches the panorama of an artist who, as a woman, decided to abandon the canvas and paintbrush for the needle and thread. The first section is devoted to thoughts and observations on the artist's work by historians, critics and writers. The second section, designed as an alphabet sampler, is an overview of the vast array of textile techniques employed in the reuse of materials that were thrown away or gradually discarded : road maps, food wrappings, handkerchiefs and used garments, doilies, rubbish sacks, metro tickets, and so on. Beyond this approach based on recovery, the artist has dedicated a large part of her creation to her basic material: thread.
