The 1812-1815 War with America really can be sub-titled 'Napoleonics with a difference' or 'Napoleonics with Indians'. The conflict presents the war gamer with a chance to use a Napoleonic British army - less virtually all its cavalry - fighting alongside 'colonial' militia against a somewhat unusual opponent. The campaigns themselves were relatively limited in both area and scope, and translate fairly well to the table top. The possibilities offered by the period also extend to include naval affairs, whether close at hand on the Great Lakes - themselves virtually inland seas - or further out on the oceans of the world. The War of 1812-1815 saw British and Canadian forces vying with Americans for the possession of huge tracts of the fledgling Canada. American expansionist policy had taken the opportunity to further its determination to annexe Canada whilst Great Britain was preoccupied in the Iberian Peninsula by the war with Napoleon. America declared war on 19th June 1812. The main theatre of operations during the war was the Great Lakes - St Lawrence River border between America and Canada and the central point of that theatre was the Niagara peninsula.
