Iron wheels groaned along the cobbled streets where coal-smoke hung low, mixing with the stench of horse dung and the sour tang of the river. Steam hissed from cracked pipes below the pavements, lifting manhole covers with little bursts of metallic sighs. The city was alive with iron lungs and rusting arteries, its underbelly whispering like some slumbering beast.
