Die Geschichte deutscher Museen im Nationalsozialismus ist ein spannendes und in vielen Fällen noch unbeleuchtetes Feld. Für das Kunstmuseum Stuttgart - seit 2005 in einem signifikanten Glaswürfel im Zentrum der Stadt beheimatet - trifft dieser Umstand nun nicht mehr zu. Der bisher weitgehend unbekannten Geschichte des Museums während der NS-Zeit kommt ein besonderer Rang zu, waren es doch die Nationalsozialisten, die die musealen Grundlagen für die erst 1924 gegründete städtische Kunstsammlung legten. Mit dem Ziel der Verwirklichung des Traums vom Museum "schwäbischer Kunst" betrieben die Nationalsozialisten ihre ideologische Kunst- und Kulturpolitik, wie im vorliegenden Band nun erstmals umfassend thematisiert und aufgedeckt wird.
The hitherto largely unknown history of the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart during the Nazi era is of particular importance. It was the National Socialists who laid the foundations for a museum to house the then quite young municipal art collection. The Nazis pursued their ideological art and cultural policy here with the aim of realising the dream of a museum of purely 'Swabian art', as has now been comprehensively investigated and disclosed here for the first time.
