The incredible Sai Baba, who died in 1918, was the most important Indian saint of his day, yet he is little known in the West. He lived in the half-ruined mosque of an obscure Indian village, allowed himself to be worshiped as a Hindu god, but still managed to attract many devout Moslem followers. He smoked foul clay paipes, and his temper was uncertain. He was continually asking for, and receiving, large sums of money, all of which he distributed again before nightfall. Teaching neither a specific philosophy nor any special means for God-realization, he flaunted his miracles with the reckless exuberance of a child.
