Arthur Miller (1915-2005) s'impose come drammaturgo con "Erano tutti miei figli" (1947), e poi con "Morte di un commesso viaggiatore" (1949), che gli diede fama internazionale. Fu anche giornalista, sceneggiatore e narratore. Il racconto qui presentato. "Monte Sant'Angelo", comparve dapprima nel 1951 sul Harper's Magazine, e poi. rimaneggiato, nella collezione di racconti intitolata "Non ho più bisogno di te" (1967). Il racconto trae origine da un viaggio realmente compiuto dall'autore sul Gargano nel 1948 insieme all'amico Jim Longhi. La postfazione dei curatori ne spiega le ragioni e gli esiti.
