Description
Caernarfon occupies a special place in the history of Wales. From Roman times it has been a site of strategic and symbolic importance, forever enshrined in the Mabinogion tale of Macsen Wledig; a legend that Edward I chose to build on when, in 1283, he commanded the construction of a mighty fortress-palace here to consolidate his hold on north Wales. Caernarfon’s castle and town walls were raised as a single entity, and from 1284 Caernarfon served as the administrative and judicial centre of the king’s newly conquered territories. The castle’s special status was given visual expression with its banded walls and polygonal towers, which recall the late Roman walls of the imperial city of Constantinople. This 44-page guidebook presents a detailed survey of the history of the castle and the town, followed by tours of the castle and the town walls.
