Description
[Letters and files on the church policy of Frederick the Wise and John the Steadfast 1513 to 1532. Reformation in the context of early modern state formation]
This volume contains over 1,350 documents from the years 1523 to 1525, reflecting the dramatic changes that accompanied the Protestant movement in Saxony and beyond. When Elector Frederick the Wise died in Lochau on May 5, 1525, his brother John the Steadfast, who had previously co-ruled, was busy dealing with the peasant uprisings that had gripped the Thuringian part of Electoral Saxony. John's sole reign marked the beginning of the enforcement of the Wittenberg Reformation by the authorities, whereby a number of the problems that had accumulated during the last phase of Frederick's life were systematically tackled. This concerned the Wittenberg collegiate and university reform, the reorganization of church services and parishes, the treatment of monasteries and monastics as well as networking with other Protestant-minded imperial princes.
