Aretha Sings the Blues

0 - Default Title
Description
On March 25th 1942 Aretha Louise Franklin was born into the world and into a family steeped in musical tradition. The fourth of five children, Aretha was raised in Memphis, Tennesse until the age of two when her family decided to move to Detroit, Michigan. Aretha's father was Reverend Cecil La Vaughn Franklin, one of the most famous pastors in the history of American Gospel. Aretha's musical abilities were apparent from an early age. Having refused her Father's advice to take professional piano lessons, Aretha taught herself to play piano by just listening to the jazz records of Eddie Heywood. As a young singer with more than enough potential she was mentored by Carla Ward who would have a profound effect on Aretha's life, as it was watching Carla Ward singing at a funeral that inspired Aretha to want to sing. Aretha made her singing debut at the age of ten as part of her Father's congregation. By the time she was twelve she was already a unique soloist. At eighteen she had dropped out of High School and with the support of her family she moved to New York to record a demo that her manager, Joe King, managed to get into the hands of the legendary John Hammond from Columbia records. Once he'd heard Aretha's demo he signed her up for a five year record deal. Aretha Sings The Blues brings together the best songs created over her years at Columbia Records. As long as the midnight oils keep burning, and as long as humans walk the earth, there always will be broken hearts and there will always be Aretha Franklin's voice to make them feel better about it all.
