En mand ved navn Ortho Bagoli kommer til kong Aureon og anklager hans tidligere plejefar Gondo Alta for at have myrdet en af hans slægtninge. De to slægter er fjender fra gammel tid. Aureon undersøger sagen, men finder ingen beviser mod Gondo. Striden blusser imidlertid op igen, da Gondos søn Sandor forelsker sig i Orthos datter Zerlina. Da hendes forældre vil gifte hende bort til en anden, hjælper Sandor hende med at flygte hjemmefra. Men hendes brødre er parate til at bruge vold for at forhindre det. Konflikten fører til en tragisk ulykke, og også Sandors liv kommer i fare. Aureon må bruge alle midler for at redde ham og sikre, at de to unge kan få hinanden.
