Description
From the moment it was first suggested that I might play Richard III for the Royal Shakespeare Company, an obsession started to grow — like being in love, there is this other person filling your waking thoughts and some of your dreams. So the book follows events in a year in the life of us two, Richard III and myself, from the first suggestion to the opening night. During that time I perform in three plays at the Barbican theatre, and televise two of them; I return to South Africa, the place of my birth, where a mountain called Lion's Head feeds the obsession; I visit homes for the disabled; I talk to a psychotherapist about psychopaths; Dennis Nilsen is on trial for mass murder; there is food for thought from Ronnie Kray, the Yorkshire Ripper, Adolph Hitler, fighting bulls in Spain and the shark from Jaws; I go for hump fittings; I go to the top film monster-maker where plaster casts are taken of my torso while upstairs a man turns into a werewolf; and then of course there are rehearsals.

Antony Sher's award-winning performance as Richard III has been received ecstatically by critics and audiences alike. Year of the King records the making of this historic theatrical event; with illustrations by the author, it is also the fascinating personal account of an actor's life and the world of the stage.
