Description
As well-known as Greek and Roman antiquity is for its intellectual greats and their works, libraries as storage and usage spaces for these texts are rarely archaeologically verifiable. The present work takes up the problem of their identification and analyses the contexts of public libraries of Hellenism and the Roman East on the basis of archaeological, epigraphic, and textual sources with the aid of concepts taken from social space research. Based on a catalogue of sixteen Greek and sixty-three Roman public libraries as well as seven ancient private libraries, the study uses selected case studies to highlight the components of these libraries. These include e.g. the library on Rhodos, the libraries at Alexandria and Tauromenion, the Royal Library in Pergamon, the Pantainos Library at Athens, the Library of Celsus in Ephesos, and the Library of Flavia Melitine at Pergamon. This provides information about contextual patterns and intentions behind the design. Further topics include the relevance of the localisation of a library in a sanctuary, the role of symposia in the context of a library, and the general significance and value of libraries as places of knowledge and education in ancient society.
