John Chamberlain, Vincent Van Gogh

Donc, lorsque je pense au musée d'Orsay... On pourrait dire que j'ai fait un tour complet et reviens en quelque sorte à mon point de départ. C'est un peu Van Gogh qui m'a lancé, et voilà que, cinquante ans plus tard, c'est moi qui lui rends visite avec ma sculpture Lipstick Canteen.

À l'invitation du musée d'Orsay, des artistes d'aujourd'hui dialoguent avec les collections en choisissant l'oeuvre de laquelle ils se sentent proches. Naît ainsi la possibilité de voir les collections sous un nouveau jour. Artiste américain né en 1929, John Chamberlain a été marqué par Van Gogh puis par l'expressionnisme abstrait et l'oeuvre du sculpteur David Smith.

Dès lors, il crée des sculptures abstraites, à partir d'éléments de carrosserie et de ferraille qu'il assemble, compresse, soude, peint... À l'invitation du musée d'Orsay, Chamberlain a répondu par le choix de Dans le jardin du docteur Gachet de Van Gogh, à la végétation exubérante, à laquelle il confronte Lipstick Canteen, qui déploie ses feuilles de métal coloré dans l'espace.

So, when I think of the Musée d'Orsay... You might say it's come somewhat full circle. Van Gogh started me up in a way and here I am fifty-odd years later visiting him with my sculpture Lipstick Canteen.

The Musée d'Orsay invites contemporary artists to dialogue with its collections by picking a work they feel close to. This is an opportunity to see the collections in a fresh light. The American artist John Chamberlain, born in 1929, was influenced by Van Gogh and later by Abstract Expressionism and the work of the sculptor David Smith. He went on to create abstract sculptures from car bodywork and scrap metal which he assembles, crushes, welds, paints etc. In response to the Musée d'Orsay's invitation, Chamberlain has chosen the lush vegetation of Van Gogh's In Dr. Gachet's Garden, confronting it with Lipstick Canteen, which deploys its leaves of coloured metal in space.
