Wole Soyinka est né au Nigeria en 1934. Revenu au pays, devenu indépendant en 1960, après ses études, il dénonce l'oppression politique dans ses oeuvres et la combat dans ses actes, ce qui le conduit par deux fois en prison dont il sort en 1969, après deux ans d'emprisonnement. A la fois acteur, musicien, metteur en scène il est avant tout dramaturge, l'un des plus neufs d'Afrique. La danse de la forêt est ici précédée d'une étude de Daniel Maximin intitulée "Tigritude et négritude".
