Design et merveilleux : de la nature de l'ornement. Design and the wondrous : on the nature of ornament

L'avènement du numérique a profondément modifié le rôle de l'ornement dans le design. L'ornement n'est plus simple motif, mais se déploie comme une « forme animée » (Greg Lynn). Au croisement des sciences informatiques et de la biologie, les designers réalisent à l'aide d'impressions 3D des objets calculés à partir des principes de croissance de la nature. Dans toutes ces réalisations, la dimension générative de la nature a conféré à l'ornement un rôle structurel nouveau.

Cet ouvrage raconte une histoire inédite du design, entre végétal et ornement, nature et artifice. Le rôle de l'ornement y est exploré dans sa dimension de morphogenèse où l'objet ne cesse de se transformer à travers une dynamique évolutive de formes. Trait d'union « entre le naturel et le surnaturel » (Étienne Souriau), l'ornement ouvre alors sur la notion de « merveilleux ».

The arrival of the digital has greatly modified the ornament's role in design. The ornament is no longer a simple motif, but is used as an « animated form » (Greg Lynn). At the intersection of information sciences and biology, designers make, using 3D printing, objects calculated based on nature's growth principles. In all these creations, the generative dimension of nature has given the ornament a new structural role.

This work recounts a new story of design, between plant life and ornament, nature and artifice. In it, the ornament's role is explored in its morphogenesis dimension in which the object is constantly transformed through an evolving dynamic of forms. A link « between the natural and the supernatural » (Étienne Souriau), the ornament then opens onto the idea of « the wondrous. »
