Ostensibly helmed by tenor saxophonist/clarinetist Bishop, the trio made their recording debut with 2005’s Time and Imaginary Time and in the intervening ten years, their group sound has continued to develop, resulting in their sophomore record De Profundis. -- -- The album features 11 original compositions and improvisations bound into two alternating extended works. The first, “De Profundis”, re-imagines the music of renaissance composer Josquin Des Prez (c. 1440-1521) and places it within the otherwise disparate context of the saxophone trio. -- -- Originally inspired by the low tessitura and the dark and mysterious vocal quality of the motet “De Profundis Clamavi”, the compositions rework a two-voice passage of the Benedictus in Missa “Pange lingua”.
