Maudite soit la guerre : 1914-1918. Damn the war : 1914-1918

En 1922, le maire de Gentioux (Creuse), ancien combattant de la Première guerre mondiale, gazé, fit réaliser ce rare monument aux morts. Un orphelin y montre du doigt l'inscription « Maudite soit la guerre », ainsi que les noms des cinquante-sept concitoyens ayant perdu la vie au cours du conflit. Les Autorités départementales refusant de le reconnaître, ce n'est qu'en 1985 qu'il fut officiellement inauguré. Chaque année, les mouvements pacifistes se réunissent devant celui-ci.

André Chabot, petit-fils de gazé, parcourt les cimetières du monde entier en quête de la dernière demeure de ces destins tragiquement balayés par le souffle mortel d'un conflit sale et absurde. « Maudite soit la guerre » ne cache pas son objectif : montrer la guerre et ses réalités, pour que jamais plus elle ne soit considérée comme une possible solution aux conflits mondiaux.

In 1922, the Mayor of Gentioux (Creuse), a former World War I soldier who was gassed, erected this rare war memorial to honour those killed in combat. An orphan points to the inscription « Damn the War, » as well as the names of fifty-seven fellow citizens who lost their lives. The local authorities refused to recognise the memorial and it was not until 1985 that it was officially inaugurated. Each year, pacifists gather together in front of the memorial.

André Chabot, the grandson of the gassed soldier, visits cemeteries throughout the world searching for the final resting places of those who were tragically swept up in that deadly and absurd conflict. « Damn the War » perfectly sums up his goal : to show the war for what it was so that it is never again seen as a possible solution to global conflicts.
