Global Authoritarianism

Description
1. Why did you choose this topic? The global authoritarian turn is one of the most pressing issues of our times. But our understanding of it is still limited: what are the actual family resemblances between different authoritarian transformations? Which specific conditions and actors are currently leading to an universalization of authoritarian practices and ideologies? Likewise, authoritarianism is often seen in opposition to liberal democracy. Especially when looking at it from the South, the continuities between different phases of neoliberal democracy become obvious.2. What new perspectives does your book offer? We propose global perspectives from the South on authoritarianism and anti-authoritarian struggles. This is an epistemological and a political positioning. On the one hand, we pretend to overcome the methodological nationalism and the focus on Europe and the US which characterizes many of the well-known analysis of the phenomenon. On the other hand, we are proposing a constellation of terms of analysis that recognizes the colonial dimension of global power relations and pretends to sketch alternative paths.3. What makes your topic relevant for current research debates?Discussions of authoritarianism and reactionary populism centered around the Global North often take them as endogenous and more or less ahistorical phenomena. They paint a democratic world which is suddenly menaced by antidemocratic forces. Our book offers a more complex view on the continuities and discontinuities of authoritarian practices. And it does so in an interdisciplinary manner, bringing together studies of the political, social, cultural and economic realm from many parts of the world.4. Choose one person you would like to discuss your book with!We really wanted to discuss our work with the Argentinian feminist thinker and activist Verónica Gago, and we're more than happy that she decided to write the foreword for us. We consider the feminist movement one of the most inspiring and promising struggles against authoritarianism, as it manages to articulate many crucial issues - from violence to debt to care work and solidarity.5. Your book summary in one sentence:Our book discusses authoritarian ideologies, movements and practices and its transnational entanglements, proposing global perspectives from the South.
