In the Philosophy of Language the author attempts to study and analyse the basic concepts we use in thinking about language. This is in contrast with viewing the philosophy of language as an attempt to exhibit language as one of the forms of world of spirit, or as an attempt to provide an overall synthesis of conclusions about language arrived at in the various social sciences. This text tries to determine, what language is and how it is related to more or less analogous forms of activity, what it is for a linguistic expression to be meaningful, what it is for a linguistic expression to have a certain meaning, and finally what it is for a linguistic expression to be vague or to be used metaphorically. The central problem which the text tries to elaborate is "What is it for the linguistic expression to have a certain meaning?" The basic approach used by the author is simple and relatively informal in contrast with the logistically minded theories.
