Sexuality in adolescence

Description
Adolescence is a time of transition between childhood and adulthood, characterized by intense growth, development and major transformations. Lack of information about sexuality contributes to vulnerability to sexually transmitted diseases and early or unwanted pregnancy. With the aim of investigating the knowledge and practices of school adolescents in relation to STDs/AIDS and pregnancy, and their understanding of the role of school in sex education, this work takes a qualitative approach with 22 adolescents aged between 16 and 19 years, secondary school students at a public school in São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil. Data was collected using an identification form and an interview script with guiding questions related to knowledge and practices on STD/AIDS and sex education in schools. The interviews were recorded and, after being transcribed, analyzed using the content analysis technique. The results are presented in four thematic categories: Sexuality and sex education; Understanding risk behaviors; Knowledge of STD/AIDS; Knowledge and Prevention Practices.
