Celebrating her birthday at a top Manhattan restaurant, twenty-one-year-old milliner Charlotte (Winona Ryder) has a chance meeting with middle-aged celebrity chef Will (Richard Gere). Will later asks Charlotte to attend a charity ball with him, but once they have slept together he is unsure whether he wants to take things any further.
