Beginning with the cavalry's origins in 1793, the history moves through the War of 1812, the Creek War, the Black Hawk War, the Florida War, the Mexican War, and the Civil War. It also covers the formation and disbanding of selected regiments, numerous battles and skirmishes, commentary on the lives and deaths of selected officers, the soldiering life, arms, horse care, and troubles with the Mormons. The author was well qualified to write this history; he served as an officer in the U.S. cavalry and also as the Special Inspector of Cavalry, Department of the Cumberland.
