Description
The comic and the absurd go hand-in-hand in Schaefer-Ast's vision of everyday life in Germany from the 1920s to the late 1940s. His brilliant drawings share affinities not only with the great German humorists like Zille and Busch but also with the British humorous artist and writer Edward Lear, whose work he greatly admired. References to the Second World War or the political and social turmoil of the time are almost totally absent from his drawings, alhough personally he often ran into trouble with the Kunstkammer (Art Board) for his anti-Nazi views. In this collection some of his work is brought for the first time to a wider audience with the text in English.
