Tschingis Aitmatow arbeitete als Veterinärmediziner auf dem Experimentiergut des Viehzuchtforschungsinstituts von Kirgisien. Er hatte bereits einige kleinere Erzählungen veröffentlicht und absolvierte 1956 ein Praktikum am Maxim Gorki-Literaturinstitut in Moskau. Als Diplomarbeit verfasste er eine Geschichte, gab ihr den Titel 'Dshamilja', und seither geht sie um die ganze Welt.

In der Neuausgabe erzählt Tschingis Aitmatow, wie die Novelle von Dshamilja und Danijar entstand und wie die 'schönste Liebesgeschichte der Welt' zunächst einen Sturm der Entrüstung auslöste.
