Una mattina Oscar, professore associato di Giurisprudenza, si guarda allo specchio e scopre d¿essere diventato un altro. Lì per lì pensa a un¿allucinazione, ma ben presto s¿accorge che colleghi e conoscenti non lo riconoscono, lo trattano da estraneo, sicché adesso dovrà imparare a convivere con le sue nuove sembianze. Allora parte per il paese di mare dove trascorreva l¿estate da ragazzo, cercando in questo spaventoso cambiamento un¿opportunità per cominciare daccapo. Vi incontra la sua vecchia fidanzata, insieme a una galleria di personaggi fuori dalla norma, mentre attorno a lui si moltiplicano i segni d¿uno stravolgimento collettivo. Oscar non è l¿unico, infatti, ad aver subito la metamorfosi, diffusa come un morbo che non si può più tenere nascosto e che in ultimo disgrega la società civile, insieme alla politica. Ormai nessuno sa più qual è il suo nome, il suo destino, il suo posto nell¿ordine sociale. Michele Ainis costruisce un romanzo immaginifico, con una storia che è insieme una metafora del tempo in cui viviamo. E accompagna Oscar in un viaggio letterario tra fughe d¿amore e nostalgie profonde, tra smarrimenti individuali e crisi generali, tra regole assurde e libertà promesse, in un mondo a sua volta assurdo, eppure così simile alla nostra realtà.
