Cuando la madre de Adam lo saca del gueto de noche y lo lleva al bosque, le promete volver esa misma tarde. La guerra ha estallado y la situación en el gueto es insostenible. En el bosque, Adam se encuentra a Thomas, un chico de su clase al que se madre también ha ocultado allí. Ambos niños son tan diferentes como complementarios.
