Anche dopo il suo ritiro a vita privata in un comodo "eremo" in Cornovaglia, Sir Charles Cartwright, un tempo il re delle scene, continua a venir considerato un personaggio illustre e i suoi ricevimenti, riservati a pochi intimi, sono avvenimenti mondani assai ricercati. Polizia e medico legale si trovano subito d'accordo nell'indicare, come causa del decesso, un infarto, e anche Hercule Poirot, che era presente, inizialmente non sospetta nulla. Ma quando, poco tempo dopo, un altro degli ospiti di quella serata muore in circostanze molto simili, il celebre investigatore dovrà ricredersi e avviare un'indagine destinata a risultati clamorosi.
