Description
Originally, the trumpet was "the instrument of command in battle, herald of authority, proclaimer of the destiny of man" (to quote the Oxford Companion to Musical Instruments); but happily, in the late 1920's it acquired valves and the capacity to imbue its sound with colour. It is obviously this present day (indeed, post-Louis Armstrong) instrument, and not its pompous and imperious precursor which Adrian Grima seeks to emulate with his voice and his word-processor. It is indeed a joy to welcome into the swaying ranks of the Maltese Poets Band somebody who does not pant to research the high F on his B flat instrument and can also move from jazz to either the neo-romantic or the neo-classic according to the mood of the moment.Peter Serracino Inglott
