Richard Percy Berry, an aspiring actor in Edwardian London, after a somewhat louche life, running up gambling debts, skipped the country to seek his fortune, promising to send for his family as soon as possible. His travels took him to the Far East, San Francisco and Canada, where he joined the army. This led to him being shipped to Europe to fight in the Great War, where he came under gas attack and was invalided out. Eventually, as Richard Lee, he arrived in Hollywood and found minor roles in some early Chaplain films. The years rolled by without him sending the invitation to his destitute family. As these events unfolded, his wife kept a scrapbook in her cottage on a Cornish moor. Now, their granddaughter unlocks the story of a beautiful young wife and children left behind over 100 years ago.
