In the pages of this book, the authors have endeavoured to provide the reader with all the information necessary for a proper assimilation of the details of the subject both in theory and practice. Much time and effort have also been devoted to the preparation of the drawings, many of which have been specially plotted to afford a graphic and more easily understood exposition of the numerous points referred to in the text, as, without the aid of such a medium, the task of making everything as clear as is desired would be rendered much more difficult. It is not to be expected that in a work of this kind and size every type of valve motion adaptable to locomotives could receive treatment. The endeavour has been made however, to include all the types nowadays in common use, together with some of the earlier forms of gearing now for the most part discontinued, and a few examples of the less familiar ones which either in this country or abroad have at one time or other enjoyed a certain vogue. The choice and design of valve is important - they enable a locomotive to function. An inefficient gear will reduce the power output and interfere with smooth and free running, but it will also adversely affect the steaming qualities of even the most excellent boiler with the result that the engine will not be able to properly do its allotted work.
