Description
Following DF 4, 14 and 15, this is the fourth and final volume on the evidence from the Ramsau Valley, which has been settled since shortly after 500 B.C. The site is a humid meadow and one of the few flat areas within the hilly low mountain range of the Dürrnberg. The book contains a catalogue of 1,729 small finds out of some 9,100 wooden remains excavated in 1988-89, the result of 30 years of intensive research. Alongside the [much sparser] remains from La Tène, Glastonbury and Porz-Lind, these finds represent an invaluable source of information about woodworking in the La Tène period. Particular attention was paid to traces of processing and the identification of tree species. Among the remarkable finds are, for example, turned vessels such as bowls, dishes, plates and delicate pyxides with lids, a baking trough, roasting spits, tinder, shovels, carding combs, nails, door bolts, a needle, tool handles and even a tube, pegs and string bridges from musical instruments, which caught the eye of the trained instrument maker Lobisser. In many cases, experimental replicas and archaeological and ethnological parallels illustrate the appearance of complete specimens.
