With the exception of his 1937 Guernica and Charnel House of 1945-46, which treat the bombing of a Basque town and the horrors of German concentration camps, respectively, Pico did not depict the war in Europe directly. Yet the savagery of World War II made its mark on Pico's work. More than 80 plates in this exhibit catalog depict still lifes with skulls, sculptures of death's heads and reapers, and paintings of weeping women, as well as images of tenderness—a child's first steps, a man holding a lamb. Numerous black and white figures illustrate essays on Pico's life and work at the time and its impact on the art world. A chronology parallels events in Pico's career and the world during the war.
