Hidden Facts About Scent Leaf Meal Compared To Synthetic Antibiotic

0 - Default Title
Description
Feed additive prepared from medicinal plants are now of great interest in livestock production. This is because of antimicrobial resistance to synthetic antibiotics. Therefore, a study was conducted to evaluate the effects of phytochemicals in scent leaf meal (SLM) such as alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, phenols etc. as an alternative to synthetic antibiotic on nutritional, physiological and health of broiler chickens. Completely randomized design (CRD) was adopted using 300 one - week old Arbor Acres chicks, allotted to six treatments with five replicates of ten birds each in a 49-day feeding trial. Commercial broiler diets used were prepared; diet 1 negative control (no additive), diet 2 positive control (with 0.5g/kg oxytetracycline), while diets 3, 4, 5, and 6 (contained 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5% and 2.0%) SLM respectively. Results showed that scent leaf meal can favourably act as natural growth promoter, immune modulator, as well as reducer of abdominal fat and cost/kg body weight in broiler chickens. Although excessive intake of scent leaf is capable of enlarging liver weight in broiler.
