x-various-artists-totp2-0731456062624
Totp2
Seventies rock has had its share of bad press, conjuring up images of beer-bellies ambitiously squeezed into worn denim and gold medallions glinting from a sea of chest hair. Boasting none of the surreal glitz that characterised glam or disco, the meat-and-two-veg, foot-to-the-floor machismo of bands like Free, Bachman--Turner Overdrive and Thin Lizzy hasn't weathered particularly well in these more "sophisticated" times. Which is a shame, because as feel-good music goes, Top Of The Pops 2: 70s Rock is an absolute belter. "All Right Now", "Ain't Seen Nothing Yet", "Silver Machine", "Smoke on the Water"--they might not win any prizes for subtlety, but they are guaranteed to cause frantic air guitar wizardry whenever one comes on the pub jukebox. Full marks, too, for the inclusion of "Paranoid" by the mighty Black Sabbath. No Seventies rock collection worth it's Old Spice would be complete without Ozzy recounting how he finished with his woman, and this doesn't disappoint. Wind-in-your-hair driving music at its best, even if you don't actually have a car. Just stick this album in your personal stereo, and even that bus ride to work won't seem quite so boring any more. --Billie Swift
